This photograph shows him wearing the insignia (known then as 'shoulder straps') of a 2nd Lieutenant on his navy blue Union Army officer's coat.  Because of that, it is believed he has this 'image' taken sometime between September 1862 and April 1864.  Just visible at the bottom of the photo is one end of a small chain that secured his pocket watch to his vest.  An electronic copy of the original image, and written permission to post it on the 80th Indiana website, were provided courtesy of Brian and Triva Schrader.

William was a resident of Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana when he enlisted on August 9, 1862 into what became Company A of the 80th Indiana.  William was mustered into the Union Army at the rank of 2nd Sergt. for a 3 year term of service on September 3, 1862 at Camp Gibson near Princeton, Indiana.  He was mustered out of the Army on June 22, 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina when the 80th was disbanded after the end of the war.  During his nearly 3 years' service he served as the 2nd Sergt., 2nd Lieut., and Capt. (commanding officer) of Co. A.
